Servant Research in Action: A CBPR Approach to Drowning Prevention in Rural Missouri

When:  Oct 8, 2026 from 12:00 to 13:00 (CT)

Join us for an engaging session exploring how rural communities can use community-based participatory research (CBPR), local partnerships, and community-led solutions to address drowning prevention and water safety challenges.

Rural lake and river communities face unique water safety risks, yet prevention efforts are often limited by access barriers, geographic challenges, and a lack of community-specific data. This session will highlight the Safe Waters Initiative, a CBPR project focused on understanding and addressing drowning risks in Shell Knob, Missouri.

Participants will learn how servant research principles shaped collaboration with community members, how local voices guided the research process, and how data can be transformed into practical tools for rural health and safety initiatives. The session will explore rural drowning trends, community survey findings, advisory board development, and lessons learned from creating sustainable, community-driven prevention strategies.
